Brain Powered Games Africa

Brain Powered Games Africa is a suite of games designed to help children that have been mentally stunted from HIV and malaria.

The original suite of BPG games was developed almost ten years ago. I was asked to work on revamping the original suite of games in preparation for use in a research study in Uganda and Malawi as well as help create a new game, Village Builder, to add to the set. Village Builder is a real time strategy game focused on improving the executive functions of affected children. In September 2019 we traveled to Kampala to playtest the revamped games and train the local researchers in conducting sessions with the games. Over a period of a week, we continued to improve the games and ensure they were in the best shape possible before the start of the study.

I began work on the original set of BPG games in May 2019. I was in charge of designing and creating brand new systems that could be used in BPG as well as other games.

  • Designed and developed generic data collection and saving system for aggregating data and event tracking, which is currently used across multiple research studies
  • Created efficient saving solution to allow for tracking multiple users' data without access to internet
  • Rebuilt original set of Brain Powered Games and began development on Village Builder
  • Created and implemented generic audio management system for easy use by our in-house composers

  • Developed objective system for gameplay progression in Village Builder
  • Redesigned titration used on original set of BPG games
  • Helped design visual based instruction screens to avoid possible language barriers
  • Spent a week and a half working in Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda to train researchers on gameplay procedures
